From earlier today, at a Nazi rally on the steps of the Wisconsin Capitol building. The Nazis said 300 would show up, the police said 100, but only 30 or 40 actually did. Can't tell the truth about anything. There were 400-500 police and riot troops and mounted officers, and somewhere between 3000 and 6000 anti-Nazi protesters.
The distance between the Nazis and the police barricade was about 250 feet, so photography was difficult. I even met a guy with a 400mm L lens and he wasn't getting anything good. So I rely on the resolving power of my Sigma 70-200/2.8 and the MP of my 20D.
I thought this seemed poetic in a way. The symbol of a police state with a riot officer in front, and the officer keeping the peace and defending the freedoms of people that would take freedom away from many.
The rationale is that freedom of speech doesn't just apply to speech with which the majority agrees. Though I can see the logic in the exceptions that many European countries have made... But that slippery slope has been traveled too. Belgium banned minarets. That is straight religious persecution, speech and religion should be basic rights afforded everyone. So I'm not completely sure where I stand on the matter, at the end of the day.
i can see the reasoning behind your argument, but nazi germany was cruel to alot of people who weren't nazis. the british, for example, were some of the victims. then there's the french, and the polish, who were in fact the first ethnic group targeted by nazi germany in 1939, when they invaded warsaw.
